Christian Aid – fighting for a world free of poverty and injustice

Christian Aid is an international development charity. We work globally for profound change that eradicates the causes of poverty, striving to achieve equality, dignity and freedom for all, regardless of faith or nationality. We are part of a wider movement for social justice.

We provide urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes.

Guernsey has contributed much to this work over the years and has its own committee, presided over by The Dean, The Very Revd Canon K Paul Mellor. Mr Roger Browning is our chairman and in a recent letter he shared this anecdote: “Christian Aid plays a vital role in providing help to people in many parts of the world. One of our collectors reported that because she had called twice to one home this year the house holder accused her of being persistent to which she gently replied, “”So would you be if you had nothing””

Christian Aid Week 2013 House to house collection in Guernsey raised £40,834.09

Castel Parish Church has supported the work of Christian Aid since Keith Nixon set out in 1973 to visit as many homes as he could to ask for contributions. This doorstep collection has continued since then, and last year 12 volunteers collected a total of £1,706.32.

Counting out all the coins and notes requires a lot of manpower, and thanks are extended to this year`s team who couldn`t have done it without a little help from a tasty portion of lasagne and a large dose of fellowship.

If you would like to help with this vital work, please feel free to contact Jan Roberts through church who will be delighted to hear from you. You can contact her on 01481 257815 or e-mail her at
